Freeport Baptist Church History

Cottage prayer meetings were held for about two years in various homes every Tuesday evening with William Williams and Clarence Gaurly acting as leaders. The Filmore school on the corner of Wood School and Eckhart roads had been closed for some time and the Lord opened the door for this group to use the building for Sunday services. In March of 1954, Sunday School and church services were first held with an attendance of 14. The Williams family donated their piano and Charles Kenyon, of Alaska Baptist Church made a pulpit. In September of 1955, the group purchased the school building for $500.00. Alaska Baptist Church loaned this new church $400.00 of the $500.00 that was bid and accepted by the school board.

A dedication service was held on May 26, 1956, in what was known as the Filmore Baptist Chapel. In the spring of 1956, evening services were started, with a good attendance. On July 14, 1957, a mortgage burning was held. Regular support was pledged to Mr. and Mrs. Geraly Link, missionaries to Mexico.

There were 15 charter members. This church grew for a few years, but then started to decline because a lack of interest. Mr. Williams who headed the group became discouraged and finally closed the doors in September of 1961. The building was in the name of Alaska Baptist Church. They took action soon after Mr. Williams closed the doors and requested the Galilean Baptist Mission take over the work.

The new work was begun February 11, 1962 with Rev. Larry Mattis, Mission Representative, in charge. Interest was stirred up with new contacts and new people. Rev. Mattis pastored the work until April of 1962.

In May 1962, a new missionary family, Rev. and Mrs. Ralph VanderWerf came to pastor the work. Soon the old school house was too small. The group had the chance to buy the Freeport high school building and three acres of land on the corner of 108th Street and Hammond Road on the north side of Freeport.

In the spring of 1963, they purchased this lot and building. With much hard work and fixing up, they soon moved into this new building and sold the old school building. The church then became known as the Galilean Baptist Church of Freeport. Rev. VanderWerf was the pastor until April 1965.

In May of 1965, a new missionary family came to pastor the work, Rev. and Mrs. Walter Winebrenner. The Winebrenner family had been living just south of Battle Creek at that time when their house had burned to the ground in March of 1965. When the mission asked Rev. Winebrenner to take over the work in Freeport, he agreed. In the summer of 1969, a remodeling program was begun. The west wing of the old building was razed. A new foyer, restrooms and storage room were constructed. There were 13 members at that time. A cordial invitation was extended to all the members of the Freeport community to avail themselves of the services and ministries of the Freeport Galilean Baptist Church.

Rev. Winebrenner remained the pastor until he retired in April of 2012. In July of 1990, under Pastor Winebrenner’s leadership the church went independent and they changed the church name to Freeport Baptist Church.

The members of Freeport Baptist Church called Rev. Ron Perrine in May 2012. He remained the pastor until his retirement in September 2019.

At the time of this writing, the church is without a pastor but is still operating with interim pastors bringing the messages in the services on Sunday morning and evening.
